Definition: Rubato, which literally means “robbed,” allows (or signifies when) a performer takes liberties with the style and execution of a song for dramatic effect; a subtle change in the execution of a song. See ad libitum, and espressivo.
Pronunciation: ruh-bah'-doe (U.S.), roo-bah'-toe
Common Misspellings: robato, rubatto
Examples: Rubato is often seen in the musical phrase tempo rubato, which means “stolen time.”
