(7♭5) seventh flat five chord

Definition: The term seventh flat five is used primarily in jazz, and refers to a seventh chord that contains a diminished fifth interval:
  • C Dominant 7th Flat Five (C7♭5)

    A dominant 7th with a flattened fifth:

      ♦ Root: C
      ♦ Major 3rd: E
      ♦ ° 5th: G♭*
      ♦ Minor 7th: B♭


  • C Minor 7th Flat Five (Cm7♭5)**

    A minor 7th with a 5:

      ♦ Root: C
      ♦ Minor 3rd: E♭
      ♦ ° 5th: G♭
      ♦ Minor 7th: B♭

* The symbol ° means diminished, or “flattened by a half step.”

** A min7♭5 is also called a half-diminished chord.
