My piano tuner isnt registered, should I be worried?
Not all piano tuners or technicians are RPTs, nor do they need be; certification is not a professional requirement in the piano tuning and repair trade.
However, there are organizations set up which maintain a standard of quality within the trade and offer certification to piano technicians who can meet those standards. A RPT, for example, has been tested by the North American-based Piano Technicians Guild.
Benefits of Hiring a RPT
On average, RPTs and non-RPTs charge you the same amount of money for a tune-up, so the decision is yours, not your wallets. A RPT has the necessary skill-set to perform both routine and specialized tunings, as well as tackle repairs to the piano action (the most complex mechanical feature inside a piano). In addition, a RPTs work may be insured by their employer (if applicable), and some must undergo criminal background checks to obtain registered status.
- Do keep in mind that some RPTs choose to specialize in either tuning or repair after their examinations, so its a good idea to make the necessary inquiries before you hire.
Hiring Unregistered Piano Tuners and Technicians
There are many well-qualified piano tuners and technicians who have simply not sought certification. But keep in mind, the piano industrys unregulated nature allows unqualified individuals to slip through the cracks, and quite possibly through your front door. Always make sure to get references before hiring a piano tuner -- RPT or not.
