Definition: In sheet music, the musical staff is the set of five horizontal lines containing notes, rests, and some musical symbols. Notes are written on and between staff lines; when they fall off the staff, they’re placed on ledger lines.

Piano music uses two staves, known collectively as the grand staff (U.S.), or great stave (U.K.) - the plural of staff is staves.
