Definition: A septuplet, also “septimole,” is a group of seven notes, which fits into the length of four, six, or eight notes of the same note-value. For example, quarter-note septuplets span the length of four quarter-notes; eighth-note septuplets span four normal eighth-notes, and so on.

A septuplet is marked with a small 7 on its beam or bracket, or slur; or may be rhythmically clarified with a ratio:

  • 7:4, meaning seven notes are played in the span of four. In simple meter, this variation is implied.

  • 7:6, seven notes span six; often seen in 6/8 or 12/8 time.
    (♫ Listen)

  • 7:8, seven notes span eight; less common.
