Definition: A natural is:
  1. A symbol (♮) placed before a note that cancels out a previous accidental; used in two ways:

    • To neutralize a sharp or flat implied by a key signature. A natural expires after one measure unless carried across the barline with a tie.

    • To neutralize a supplemental sharp or flat in the same measure.*

  2. Any note that is neither sharp nor flat.

  3. White piano keys are also called “naturals.”

* Double-naturals (♮♮) are used in traditional sheet music to cancel out double-accidentals. Today, a single natural may be used for this purpose.
