Definition:

Irrational rhythm refers to a note-grouping that is played in the length of another note or beat. Irrational (also “irregular”) rhythm is notated using tuplets; or is specified by a complex time signature, in which the top integer is odd (such as 5/8 or 7/8.

Also Known As: extra-metric note-grouping, abnormal division


Pronunciation: ear-ASH-en-əl rih'-thm (TH as in ‘that’)
