What is Boogie Woogie?

Boogie Woogie is a style of playing the piano in which the left hand moves up and down in a walking bass pattern. It's based on the blues scale, although not all of the notes from that scale are used.

In the example below you can see the notes used in a typical boogie woogie pattern in the key of C. Notice how the pattern skips some notes but includes G, A and B flat. And of course, the B flat tells us that it's part of the blues scale.
